Child Therapy in Nova Scotia
Supportive Space for Your Child (ages 5-12)
Is This What Your Child Is Going Through?
Younger children frequently struggle with big feelings and emotions they don’t yet understand or know how to deal with. If that’s the case with your child, you may notice that they are:
Becoming more withdrawn
Acting out or reacting disproportionately to the situation
Experiencing mood swings and sleep disturbances
Struggling with making or keeping friends
Having trouble adjusting to family or life changes (e.g., divorce)
Because children don’t really know how to articulate what they are going through, they show their feelings through their behaviour. And this is where the role of an experienced child therapist begins.

Discover Child Therapy
Here at Curran Counselling, we create a gentle and supportive space where your child can:
Express themselves in a safe manner
Work through their emotions challenges
And feel truly seen and heard
Amanda, our child therapist, specializes in working with younger children (ages 5-12) using developmentally appropriate methods and therapy approaches that help your child make sense of their emotions, build confidence, and feel more secure.
Your child can be struggling with anxiety, family difficulties, and behavioural changes, and we’re here to support both them and you through therapy.
Our goal is to help children grow emotionally, socially, and mentally so they can thrive at home, in school and in their relationships.
Our Approach to Child Counselling
As part of our work with young clients, we often use evidence-based programs and approaches, such as Zones of Regulation, We Thinkers!, and the Superflex Curriculum. These approaches help children build awareness of their emotions, develop self-regulation, and improve social skills.
Zones of Regulation
This approach helps your child recognize and name
their emotions by categorizing them into colour-coded “zones” that help them make their feelings more understandable.
We Thinkers!
This strategy uses stories and play-based lessons to teach social concepts, such as taking different perspectives, flexible thinking, and group cooperation.
Superflex Curriculum
This program introduces fun, superhero-themed characters to help children identify unhelpful thought patterns. It’s very helpful when working with children with autism and ADHD.
Through those strategies, we teach children how to identify their feelings, understand how their behaviour affects others (family and friends), and practice flexible thinking. These tools are especially helpful for kids who struggle with emotional control and social interactions.
What You (And Your Child) Can Expect During Child Therapy Sessions
Our child therapy sessions are always tailored to your child’s needs and personality. At first, we focus on building a comfortable and trusting relationship between your child and the therapist. Amanda does so through games, creative activities, and conversations. Her goal is to create a space where your child can begin to understand and learn how to cope with what’s going on in their “inner world” in a safe and comfortable way.
Depending on the situation and therapy goals, as therapy progresses, we may focus on:
Developing emotional awareness
Problem-solving skills
Healthy ways of coping with stress and anxiety
You, as a parent, get regular check-ins and practical tools to support your child’s growth outside the therapy room.
